Evening Primrose Oil
Evening Primrose Oil is extracted from the seeds
of the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis), whose name refers
to the fact that its flowers open in the evening. Evening primrose
grows in parts of North America, Europe and Asia. Native Americans
and early European colonists used evening primrose root to treat
such conditions as hemorrhoids, stomachaches, sore throat, and bruises.
We now know that Evening Primrose Oil contains gamma-linolenic acid
(GLA). Your body converts GLA into prostaglandins. While prostaglandins
can either increase or reduce inflammation, the prostaglandins produced
from GLA are anti-inflammatory, helping to prevent reddening and
scarring of the skin. The fatty acids in Evening Primrose Oil replace
acids lost by the body that the body can't regenerate properly on
its own. In this way, Evening Primrose Oil helps maintain the shape
and texture of the skin, working to prevent wrinkles and limiting
the effects of skin aging. Evening Primrose Oil also has a relaxing
effect on the skin. Research also indicates that GLA works to prevent
or in some cases reverse nerve damage from diabetes and reduces
blood lipid concentrations, which is valuable in controlling cholesterol
levels. GLA is essential for the health of cell membranes, and has
been associated with benefits in treating premenstrual syndrome,
joint pain from rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, acne and lupus. It
also produces a prostaglandin that helps reduce symptoms of alcohol
withdrawal.
